Common Garage Door and Operator Difficulties
It can be helpful to determine before calling for service whether the problem you are experiencing is related to the overhead door or the electric garage door operator.
I can't seem to open my garage door with the remote control.
Why can't I open my door manually?
My remote will only work when I am very close to my garage.
My garage door will only close if I hold the wall button down until the door reaches the floor.
My garage door operator reverses mid-cycle for no apparent reason.
My keyless entry doesn't work.
I lost my remote control. How can I deactivate it?
Can I get a new remote control?

I can't seem to open my garage door with the remote control.

Check the battery. Make sure the vacation lock is not activated (if equipped). Disconnect the door from the garage door opener by pulling the disconnect handle - if you can open it just fine, the problem is with the opener. Is the antenna fully extended? Is the remote control programmed to the opener? Did you just experience a power surge that damaged other electrical components in your home? Check to make sure the outlet the operator is plugged in to is working. Do you have a GFI circuit that is tripped?

Why can't I open my door manually?

If the power is out and you are trying to open the door manually, have you pulled the release handle to separate the operator from the door? Is the spring broken? Are the cables detached or broken? It may sound silly - but is the door locked? If you've recently painted the door, have you painted the doorstop to the door? All of these things will make the door very hard, if not impossible to open manually.

My remote will only work when I am very close to my garage.

Older operators can sometimes loose receiver capability and/or loss of range when components of the remote control system start to wear out. The radio controls can be replaced. A power surge can also damage the receiver part of the logic board. In parts of Virginia Beach and surrounding areas, there are government, military, and security communication interference problems that occur from time to time. This generally only affects garage door operators with a 315-318mHz frequency set, and generally for just a few days. If the interference is severe, the operator can be changed to the older 390 mHz system. However, you need to be aware that in the event of a regional or national catastrophe, first responder communications switch to 390mHz - and the same thing is likely to happen again.

My garage door will only close if I hold the wall button down until the door reaches the floor.

Your safety sensors are either damaged, misaligned, shorted electrically, or something is blocking the beam. Check for any obstruction - even something like debris stuck to the bottom of the door. Clean the lens of the sensor. Make sure the sensors are lined up with each other. Make sure power is getting to the sensor. You can determine which is the sender and which is the receiver by covering one of the lenses. If the sensor indicator light stays lit, you have the sending sensor. Adjust the receiving sensor.

My garage door operator reverses mid-cycle for no apparent reason.

Seasonal changes can make the door appear to be temperamental. Your home is made of wood under all that pretty facade, and wood can expand and contract. Consult your operator manual for force adjustment information. There is a link to owner's manuals for LiftMaster products on the links page. (Chamberlain and Sears uses can also use those manuals - just find something in a similar model.)

My keyless entry doesn't work.

Check the battery first. Are you using the correct entrance code? A keyless entry is nearly the same as a transmitter. See transmitter difficulties.

I lost my remote control. How can I deactivate it?

You can easily deactivate a remote, but you need to be aware that EVERYTHING will be deactivated, including HomeLink equipped devices. Then you can't use your other remote or device until you retune it. To erase all the remotes, keyless entry, and other devices, press the "program" button on the back of the opener's logic board and hold it for 10 seconds. Use your remaining remote to confirm erasure.

Can I get a new remote control?

Absolutely! You just call in with the model number, and we'll ship one to you. The model number is usually on the back of a remote. If you have no remaining remote, we can tell what you need from the logic board part number.
