Energy Tax Credit
|
| |
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 extended the credit for energy efficient home improvements to include 2009. A new, insulated garage door may qualify for this credit.
Among the criteria for the credit, which can total no more than $500 total in 2006 and 2007, $1500 in 2009 and 2010, are the following:
the insulated door must be installed on an insulated space attached to the principle residence;
the door must have a U-factor less than or equal to 0.35;
there must be a means to control air infiltration at the perimeter; and
the product must have an expected life of 5 years or more.
Recent revisions have changed some of the qualifying products. Generally, higher r-value products qualify, bringing the net cost down to mid-level product cost. Each manufacturer has their own form for you to fill out and keep with your tax records. (The form isn't actually filed with the tax return.) Copy and paste into your browser
