Cletus L. Hobbs founded Hobbs Door Company in 1966 with a clear vision: to provide builders and homeowners in Hampton Roads with quality garage doors and professional service that was unmatched at the time.
At that time, most garage door dealers treated doors as a secondary product, alongside gutters, windows, tile, or even swimming pools. Installations were often handled by carpenters or handymen without proper training or experience. Hobbs Door Company set itself apart by focusing entirely on expert garage door service, earning praise from the community. By 1968, we were serving many of the region’s top home builders, with a service area stretching from Williamsburg, VA, down to Ocracoke, NC.
Through the construction booms of the 1970s and 1980s, we expanded our services to include commercial overhead doors, supporting businesses and commercial builders across Hampton Roads. By 1980, Hobbs Door Company was serving and expanded list of home builders and had grown our commercial door and operator division.
Responding to consumer demand for custom wood doors, we developed our own CedarCraft line, with production facilities in Chesapeake and Rockingham County, VA. Even today, many CedarCraft doors are still in use throughout the coastal areas of Virginia and eastern North Carolina.
By the mid-1990s, steel doors became more popular than wood, prompting us to shift our focus from manufacturing to installations, repairs, and service. To reflect this new direction, we updated our name to Hobbs Door Service, emphasizing the fast, professional, and reliable service that the Hobbs family has been known for.
Today, Hobbs Door Service operates three locations throughout the south eastern United States. The family tradition continues with Cletus Hobbs’ three sons and a team of experienced, time-tested door technicians. Known for completing every job right the first time, we have earned industry-leading ratings in customer loyalty and satisfaction.
